How To Create A Simple Business Plan

If you are to build a house, you need to create first a blueprint for building the house to make sure that the structural design and specifications are followed. Wouldn't it be great if you also create a blueprint when building your business?

That blueprint for building a business is what we call Business Plan. Having a business plan helps you focus on working for the things that matter to your business, and stick to what is written in the plan. Without it, your business decisions can easily be swayed.

The Standard Business Plan Format
  1. Summary Statement. The summary statement is a brief description of your business and the key elements in the business plan. It is usually no longer than one page. The goal of the summary is to entice the reader to have the desire to read the rest of the document.
  2. Company Analysis. This section gives your reader the overview of your planned business. It includes general description of the product or service, the business format, the marketing plans, how will you operate the business, and the goals of the business.
  3. Product or Service. Develop a detailed description of what you make or provide. Write your sales projections, any product evaluations that you think will help the reader understand your business, and a comparison of your service or products with your competitors'.
  4. Industry Analysis. Start your industry analysis by describing your industry, trade, or profession. Provide a short explanation on when the industry started; where it is today; and, what the general projections for industry growth are for the next 5 years.
  5. Market Analysis and Strategy. Explain your potential base of customers, your competition, and your advertising program. Describe your target market in detail. Include features of your average customers such as age, geographic area, income, buying habits, etc. Identify the target market needs of your products or service. Provide specific estimates as to the number of sales you expect. Describe how you intend to market your product or service. Describe your plans for websites, professional or trade associations, word-of-mouth advertising, and tri-media advertising spots.
  6. Management Analysis. This section of your business plan should contain your resume, your business experience, and the same for any employees or partners. 
  7. Business Ownership. This section should contain a resume and history of business experience for you or for any partners or part owners of the company. Include the legal status of the business, such as "Incorporated in _________", or sole proprietorship in ___________". Also, you should attach copies of any legal incorporation papers, partnership agreements, or other legal documents of the business.
  8. Business Expansion Goals. The expansion goals section where you want your business to be in three to five years. Explain on how you will measure growth in your operation. And when you discuss any expansion plan, make clear that you will make decisions to expand based upon the realistic assessment of your past performance.
  9. Financial Analysis. Estimate the amount of capital you have to work with and its source. Insert your business budget, sales estimates, expenses and profit. Indicate the minimum profit you have to make in order for your expenses to be covered by your income, and to reach "break even point".  
  10. Schedule of Implementation. Having this section in your business plan shows you have a solid grasp on the actions needed to set up and operate a home-based business. Below is an example:
  • If you plan to have a business that markets a product, show when you will order items, when do you expect delivery, and when you will take your first order, or make your first sale or delivery.
  • If you are in a service profession, show when you graduated from school and when you will have all the licenses and credentials that you need to perform your service.
  • If you need to remodel a space in your home, give the date when the work will be done, and how soon after that you will be able to open for business.
This is a simple business plan format for a home-based business. Remember, even if it is just a home-based business, it would be great if you can create a business plan, for it will help you get focused on what's laid in your business plan. If ever change occurs along the way, make sure to notify important entities like your bankers, your lending institution, and your investors about the change in your business plan.

For graduates of business courses, this task is easy. But for those interested in getting into a business but don't have enough business backgrounds, you may sometimes find this hard. So, I'd like to share here some tips about creating a business plan.

The Importance of a Business Plan
The importance of having a business plan cannot be overstated, as much as your success depends on it. A business plan covers important things such as funding, credit from suppliers, management of your operations and finances, and promotion and marketing of your business. It is really important since it can show you whether your business idea has the potential to make a profit.

Developing A Business Plan (Before Actually Writing It)
Your purpose is to have a document that provides some key information for others and outlines what it is that you hope to accomplish. It will forces you to look at what it is you think what you want to do. It will help you determine if your idea is possible, or realize that it is not going to work.This process starts with asking yourself some questions, then breaking down those questions with more detailed analysis.

Before writing your business plan, consider these five questions:
  1. What service or product do you want your business to provide and what needs in the marketplace it intends to fill?
  2. Who are your target market and why will they purchase it from you?
  3. How will you reach your potential customers?
  4. What kind of help or assistance you will need?
  5. How much money (for both personal and business reasons) will you need to get off the ground and where will you get the financial resources to start your business?
Once you have done your research, you have to put your business plan in writing. Keep these things in mind as you write your business plan;
  1. Keep only topics appropriate for your business. 
  2. Make sure all the entities are accurate.
  3. Spend most of your time researching marketing, cash flow, and the break-even point.
  4. Research and analysis of the data help to make the best business plan for home-based businesses.
  5. Write your business plan for its readers and not solely for you, especially if you intend to use the plan to get funding.
The Time Your Business Should Cover
Your business plan should cover at least a period of one year. For some businesses, they can cover three to five years. If you're planning to get a loan for your business, a loan officer usually wants to see a business plan that usually covers three to five year activities.

Outline Of A Business Plan
Begin with a cover sheet listing the company's name and the date the plan was written. Include a table of contents that lists major subject headings and the page where each topic begins.

In addition to the cover page and table of contents, the following topics are common in most business plans:
